Bouna and Zyed, two kids from Clichy-sous-Bois were electrecuted to death on October 27th, 2005. They were taking refuge from the police in an energy plant. This drama sparked the largest wave of urban violence that France has ever seen, to the point where the government declared a state of emergency on the country. It also caused a media tsunami that has no equivalent.

It’s too early to say if history will leave it behind, once everyone calms down. What took place in those contradictory weeks ? In the short term, one thing is unfortunately sure : the image of Clichy-sous-Bois is linked to the violence and hard-life of Parisian suburbs. Clichy Sans Cliché is a proposal to try and correct this image. An attempt to respond is not to try and build another image. On the contrary, it anchors itself in the real, to show the thousand and one images of life in Clichy. Omitting nothing, neither difficulty, nor joy.

Clichy sans cliché is an hommage to Bouna and Zyed to show them that they leave behind a legacy to the men and women that are here, the hope of creating together, a new life culture. Clichy sans Cliché is above all an offering. Twelve well-known photographers representing different currents of this practice are invited to travel the city. To take the time to meet and discover. To look without theory, or sentimentality. To break away from the binary vision created in part by the media blitz.
